English Article Version
On March 18, 2014, a student-led protest movement known as the Sunflower Movement began in Taiwan.
The movement started when student activists occupied the Legislative Yuan in Taipei to protest the proposed Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement with mainland China. Protesters argued that the agreement had been pushed through the legislative process without sufficient transparency or public review.
Thousands of students and citizens soon gathered outside the parliament building in support of the occupation. The demonstrations lasted for weeks and attracted international attention.
The sunflower became the symbol of the movement, representing transparency and hope. Protesters used the flower to express their demand for greater democratic oversight and openness in policymaking.
The Sunflower Movement became one of the most significant social movements in modern Taiwanese politics and had lasting influence on civic participation and political discourse in Taiwan.
