English Article Version
On March 20, 2015, a major Solar Eclipse of March 20, 2015 was observed across large parts of Europe, the North Atlantic, and the Arctic.
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking the Sun’s light. Depending on the observer’s location, the eclipse may appear total, partial, or annular.
The 2015 eclipse was a total solar eclipse along a narrow path that crossed the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean, including the Faroe Islands and Svalbard. Across much of Europe — including the United Kingdom — people witnessed a partial eclipse, where a large portion of the Sun was covered by the Moon.
Millions of people watched the rare celestial event using protective eclipse glasses or telescopes. Schools, observatories, and science organizations also held public viewing activities.
The solar eclipse of March 20, 2015 became one of the most widely observed astronomical events of the decade, reminding people of the remarkable alignment of the Earth, Moon, and Sun.
