On March 23, 1950, the World Meteorological Organization officially came into existence.
The organization was created to coordinate international cooperation in meteorology, climate science, and hydrology. It replaced the earlier International Meteorological Organization, which had operated since the late 19th century.
Headquartered in Geneva, the WMO became a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1951.
Through global networks of weather stations, satellites, and scientific cooperation, the organization plays a vital role in monitoring climate patterns, forecasting weather, and supporting disaster preparedness worldwide.
Today, the World Meteorological Organization helps countries share crucial atmospheric data, improving global understanding of weather systems and climate change.
