English Article Version
On March 6, 1834, the town of York was officially incorporated as the City of Toronto, in what is now Ontario, Canada.
Originally known as York, the settlement had been established in 1793 as the capital of Upper Canada. However, to distinguish itself from other places named York and to reflect its Indigenous roots, the city adopted the name “Toronto,” derived from a Mohawk word often interpreted as “place where trees stand in the water.”
At the time of incorporation, Toronto was a small but growing colonial town with a population of around 9,000 people. It served as a political and commercial center for the region.
Over the following decades, Toronto expanded rapidly through immigration, industrialization, and railway development. Today, it stands as Canada’s largest city and one of the most multicultural urban centers in the world.
March 6, 1834, marks the official beginning of Toronto’s transformation from a colonial town into a global metropolis.
