As Cao Cao’s power grows, Emperor Xian becomes little more than a figurehead. Loyal officials secretly plot to remove Cao Cao through a hidden imperial edict. Liu Bei is drawn into the conspiracy. After the famous exchange over wine, the atmosphere in Xuchang becomes increasingly tense.
Cao Cao maintains a calm exterior, but internally, he grows more cautious of Liu Bei. Meanwhile, within the imperial court, a different current begins to take shape.
Emperor Xian, under Cao Cao’s control, lives as a figurehead. Though he holds the title of emperor, he has no real power. Frustration and fear build within him.
In response, a group of loyal officials begins to act in secret.
They believe that unless Cao Cao is removed, the Han Dynasty will truly fall.
Thus, a hidden edict is created.
The document is concealed within a garment—hence the name “Secret Edict in the Girdle.” It calls upon loyalists to unite and eliminate Cao Cao.
The plan is extremely dangerous.
Failure would mean death for all involved.
Liu Bei is drawn into this conspiracy.
For him, it presents both an opportunity and a risk. To participate would mean open defiance against Cao Cao; to refuse could mean abandoning his cause.
In the end, he chooses caution.
