English Version
On the hillsides of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the night carries a stillness that can feel almost unsettling, where scattered campus lights glow faintly among dense trees, and the wind slips softly through the branches as if whispering secrets from another time, and within this quiet environment, many supernatural tales have taken root over the years, but among them, one of the most well-known is the legend of the “Braided Girl,” a mysterious figure said to appear late at night in certain parts of the campus, particularly along a dim mountain path or inside the elevators of student dormitories, described as a young woman dressed in an old-style school uniform with a long braid trailing down her back, her appearance tied to an uncertain past, with some claiming she was a student from the 1960s or 70s while others believe she belonged to an even earlier era, yet regardless of the details, the story has long been enough to send chills through those who hear it, and for Siu Ming, a first-year university student who had only recently arrived on campus, the legend existed somewhere between curiosity and disbelief, as he considered himself a rational person who did not truly believe in ghosts, yet could not deny a certain fascination with stories that so many others seemed convinced were real, and one night, after studying late at the library until the campus had grown quiet and nearly deserted, he stepped outside into the cool air and found the surroundings transformed into something unfamiliar, the usual liveliness replaced by silence and shadow, with only a few dim street lamps flickering in the distance, and instead of taking a well-lit route back to his dormitory, he chose to walk along the very path that was often mentioned in the legend, partly out of curiosity and partly out of a desire to prove to himself that there was nothing to fear, and as he walked along the narrow mountain road, the tall trees on either side blocked much of the moonlight, forcing him to rely on the flashlight of his phone to illuminate the way ahead, and though he kept reassuring himself that the story was nothing more than a myth, he could not ignore the subtle tension building within him, especially when he suddenly felt a cold breeze brush past him from behind, prompting him to turn around instinctively, only to find that there was no one there, nothing but darkness stretching back along the path he had just walked, and although he tried to dismiss it as nothing more than wind, his heartbeat quickened and a faint unease settled over him, and it was then that he noticed something ahead, beneath one of the dim street lamps, a figure standing motionless on the path, its outline faint yet unmistakably human, and as he stared, he realized it was a woman, facing away from him, wearing a light-colored top, with a long braid hanging down her back, and for a moment he froze, caught between fear and curiosity, uncertain whether to approach or retreat, yet ultimately his curiosity pushed him forward, step by cautious step, until he was close enough to see her more clearly, and as he approached, the woman seemed to sense his presence and slowly turned her head toward him, revealing a face that drained the warmth from his body in an instant, pale and devoid of life, her eyes hollow and empty, yet her lips curved into a faint, unnatural smile that felt entirely out of place, and overwhelmed by fear, Siu Ming stumbled backward, his mind struggling to process what he was seeing, and when he looked again, the figure was gone, leaving behind only the empty path, the dim light, and the rustling of leaves in the wind, and he ran back to his dormitory in a state of shock, later recounting the experience to his roommates, who laughed and suggested he had been overtired or imagining things, yet no matter how much he tried to accept their explanation, something deep within him insisted that what he had seen was real, and a few days later, driven by a mixture of fear and determination, he decided to return to the path, this time accompanied by several classmates, and together they walked through the darkness with flashlights in hand, joking and talking in an attempt to ease their nerves, yet as they approached the area where Siu Ming had seen the figure before, an unusual sound emerged from the nearby woods, a faint noise that seemed like quiet sobbing, blending with the sound of wind moving through the leaves, and when they stopped to listen, they realized they were all hearing it, a soft, sorrowful crying that seemed to come from deeper within the trees, and after a moment of hesitation, they decided to follow the sound, stepping off the path and into the forest, where the darkness thickened and the air grew colder, and as they moved further in, the crying became clearer, guiding them until they finally saw a figure beneath a large tree, curled up on the ground with her knees drawn close, her shoulders trembling as if she were weeping, and even before they saw her face, they knew it was the same girl, the long braid unmistakable in the faint beam of their flashlights, and gathering his courage, Siu Ming spoke, asking if she was alright, yet the figure did not respond, instead slowly lifting her head, and in that moment, all of them felt a surge of terror, because her face was no longer merely pale but distorted, twisted into something unnatural, her eyes empty voids that seemed to absorb the light itself, and at once someone shouted for them to run, and they turned and fled back toward the dormitories, their footsteps pounding against the ground as though something unseen was chasing them, though whenever they dared to glance back, there was nothing there, only darkness closing in behind them, and when they finally reached safety, they found themselves breathless and shaken, their faces drained of color, each of them aware that they had shared something they could not easily explain away, and that night, Siu Ming found himself unable to sleep, his mind replaying the image of the girl’s face over and over, the hollow eyes and the faint smile etched into his memory, and in the days that followed, he began to hear more stories about the Braided Girl from others around campus, with some claiming she had taken her own life due to a tragic relationship, her spirit unable to leave the place where her emotions had been strongest, while others suggested she had died in an accident and lingered on unwillingly, her presence tied to the paths and buildings she once knew, yet despite his attempts to uncover the truth, searching through campus records and speaking with older alumni, Siu Ming found no concrete evidence to confirm any of these accounts, leaving the story suspended between rumor and reality, and over time, he came to accept that some mysteries do not offer clear answers, choosing instead to remain unresolved, and though he no longer actively sought out the legend, he could never fully forget what he had experienced, because every time he walked that mountain path at night, he felt the lingering weight of that encounter, as though the memory itself had become part of the place, and perhaps the legend of the Braided Girl is not simply a story meant to frighten, but a quiet reminder that there are things in this world that cannot be easily understood, that some secrets remain hidden in the darkness for a reason, and that once glimpsed, even for a moment, they leave an imprint that does not fade, continuing to exist just beyond the edge of sight, waiting silently in the night.
