Xi Bao is not merely a story about love and wealth, but an experiment in choice. When love turns conditional, emotions become transactions, and what is lost is not just relationships but the self. This piece revisits Xi Bao’s world, questioning whether her choices are a fall from grace or a form of awakening.

English Version

In Xi Bao, love is never pure; it is structured by terms, conditions, and exchanges, shaped by a quiet but undeniable logic. What makes Xi Bao unsettling is not her choice of wealth over romance, but her clarity—she knows exactly what she is choosing. She is neither deceived nor self-deluded. In a world where love is often romanticized, such clarity becomes a form of rebellion. The city in Yi Shu’s writing is never gentle; it is precise, pragmatic, and often indifferent. Within it, people do not simply pursue love—they negotiate survival. Xi Bao, shaped by her background, understands early on that emotion without material support rarely endures. She recognizes the rules of the world and chooses to engage with them directly rather than pretend she is above them. Her relationship with a wealthy man is, at its core, an agreement—an unspoken yet mutually understood transaction. She gains security, access, and mobility; he gains youth, companionship, and emotional projection. It is not romantic, but it is stable—arguably more enduring than many relationships built on illusion. Yet the deeper question emerges: when everything becomes exchangeable, what remains beyond valuation? As Xi Bao acquires everything she once desired, she gradually realizes that she herself has become defined by those very conditions. She is no longer an autonomous individual but a role constructed through relationships, her value tied to external needs. When conditions shift, so does her place. The anxiety she feels is not rooted in poverty but in the erosion of selfhood. Yi Shu does not judge Xi Bao morally; instead, she presents a character of radical honesty—someone unwilling to lie to herself. Xi Bao’s choice is not a fall but the logical outcome of confronting reality without illusion. She exposes the unspoken truth that many so-called romantic relationships are also transactional, merely softened by narrative and sentiment. When love becomes conditional, can the self remain intact? The answer is complex, as the “self” is often shaped within relationships. Xi Bao’s tragedy lies not in choosing wrongly but in choosing too clearly. Without illusion, she also loses the buffer that illusion provides. She faces consequences directly, and in doing so, becomes profoundly alone, unable to return to a belief in unconditional love. Through her, Yi Shu does not reject love but deconstructs it, revealing how it is shaped by social structures and material realities. Once this is understood, every choice becomes heavier. The most brutal aspect of Xi Bao’s story is the absence of redemption. She is not saved by love, nor does she return to innocence. She simply continues living, carrying the weight of her decisions. This ending is more real than tragedy itself, reflecting the true nature of the modern city. In such a world, one may not escape conditions, but one can choose how to confront them. Xi Bao chooses honesty—and that honesty becomes both her strength and her solitude.
