On March 30, 1981, Ronald Reagan, the President of the United States, survived an assassination attempt in Washington, D.C..
The incident occurred outside the Washington Hilton Hotel after Reagan delivered a speech. As he was leaving the building, a gunman, John Hinckley Jr., fired several shots at the president and his entourage.
Reagan was struck by a bullet that ricocheted off the presidential limousine and entered his chest, narrowly missing his heart. He was quickly taken to hospital, where doctors successfully performed emergency surgery.
The president recovered and returned to work within weeks. His calm response and sense of humor during the recovery period increased his popularity among the American public.
The event remains one of the most dramatic moments in modern U.S. political history.
